Final Fantasy 14

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

In my opinion this was the biggest and most surprising thing out of e3 2009. Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy 14 (before the release of Final Fantasy 13 mind you). Final Fantasy 14 will be the successor to Final Fantasy XI Online. From the trailer, it looks like it may remain in Vana’diel. Ironically, I began to play Final Fantasy XI once again. I must say the game has improved a great deal and I’m enjoing it. My jaw dropped to the floor when I heard about the next MMO follow up.  So far, the game will be released on the PS3 and the PC. I am absolutly thrilled with this news. The official site is here.

How could you make a mass multi-player online role playing game (MMORPG) better than the World of Warcraft? Other than superficial improvements, such as graphics, I don’t know what you could do better. Personally, If I were going to attempt to create a new experience for an online RPG, I’d think really hard about getting rid of the Tank/Healer/Nuker format. I never bothered with Instances and Raids in WoW till I was level 60. Even then, I rarely did them. WoW is probably the most casual friendly MMO you’ll find. When you hear about people playing WoW obsessively it’s not because you are forced to do this, it’s just that addictive. Unlike most games, WoW constantly rewards you. They do it just to keep a smile on your face, but not too much to bore you. Personally, I found WoW very easy to play. (more…)
